Neoprene vs PE foam for collars

I read that many are using neoprene collars for plant support in their cloners.

Because neoprene sheets seems hard to come buy at normal hardware stores and the ready made collars seem a bit expensive, I was wondering if there is any good reason why one couldn't simply use PE foam sheets for the job? The material should be pretty similar right? And PE foam is everywhere, for example in sleeping pads that are quite cheap..

Well I did a test with self-made PE foam collars that I simply cut out of a exercise pad. So far none of my sprouts survived when I carefully took them out of the wet paper towel and placed the in the collar and then into the aeroponics cloner. I'm not sure if the reason was the material of the collar (probably not) or something else. I'm very new to all of this so I guess its going to be a lot of trial and error..
